The Wairarapa Māori Sports Awards was first established in 2007 by the late Jeff Workman. Jeff developed the awards to celebrate Wairarapa Maori sporting participation, achievement and excellence within Wairarapa and to showcase positive role models within the Wairarapa rohe.
The inaugral event in 2007 was by invitation only, and was well supported the public feedback was extremely positive and demanded that this event be opened to the community, so the committee organised the event for the public. This annual event continues to be an awesome community event and is well supported by Wairarapa community and continues to promote, encourage and celebrate Wairarapa Māori Sporting excellence.
In 2015 a new award was introduced and it was hugely appropriate that this be named the "Jeff Workman Memorial Award" and is the PEOPLES CHOICE award - where the public get to vote on the who the recipient will be.
